A victory after 7 years of struggle

On 16 th December, 2012 in South Delhi a 23-year-old girl was travelling in a bus along with her male friend when she was   gang raped , tortured and murdered by six men aboard .  The incident was so heinous and brutal that it led to an uproar all over the world. It touched the conscience of each and every citizen of India. This case brought people out on streets, not just demanding safety laws but forcing every home to mull on the otherwise tabooed issue of gender violence. The case was given the name of ‘Nirbhaya’ that means ‘fearless’ by the media. A total of six people were convicted, out of which one accused being a juvenile was released after a three-year reform facility. The four convicts, Akshay, Pawan, Vinay and Mukesh were convicted for raping and murdering the victim. The sixth convict, Ram Singh died during the trial. Citizen Amendment Bill

Citizenship Amendment Bill  (CAB)  has been in the news a lot recently. For those of you wondering ‘What is CAB?’ ‘Why are people of Assam protesting against CAB?’ This blog will give you a short glimpse about CAB. The  Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019  is an Act of the  Parliament of India  amending the  Citizenship Act of 1955  to give a path to Indian citizenship to illegal migrants who entered India on or before 31 December 2014. It also seeks to relax the requirement of residence in India for citizenship by  naturalization  from 11 years to 5 years for these migrants. The Act excludes  Muslims  from such eligibility.  Assam noticed a huge influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants added to voter list, threatening their land, culture and livelihood. While CAB is supposedly Pan India, almost entire influx happens through the Assam border, which is more than 50 lakhs till date. International Women’s Day (IWD)  is dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements in the social, economic, cultural, and political spheres. The day, collectively founded by women, also brings attention to gender parity and women's rights. Originally called National Woman’s Day, the monumental annual celebration spread across the world (officially celebrated in 1911), but it was  Russia who unknowingly set the March 8 trend . Although International Women’s Day became an official holiday in Russia in 1913, women still experienced difficulties caused by WWI. While men were off at war, women dealt with food shortages and a government who wouldn’t listen to them. On March 8, 1917 (February 23 in the former Russian calendar), tens of thousands of Russian women took to the streets demanding change.
