JioMart – Boon or Curse for the consumers?

On 23rd May, 2020 Reliance Industrial Limited (RIL) which is famous for communication, entertainment, Mumbai metro and much more, has launched its new online retail shop, JioMart. It is an online selling channel (format) of Reliance Retail Limited.

With Vocal for Local on the go, where people are switching towards national products, challenging all the other online grocery stores like, Big Basket, Amazon Pantry, Flipkart Supermarket, Grofers; JioMart is all set to be another contestant of the race.

The CEO of JioMart, Damodar Mall announced the launch of JioMart on twitter, stating never waste a crisis, Alibaba also flourished during a crisis.

JioMart claims to provide goods at a very low price and deliver for free in every big or small town. Initially, when JioMart was launched, it took bookings using a designated WhatsApp number. It was a business profile and sent automated messages. Customers were supposed to say ‘hi’ and a link was sent to order groceries from JioMart. However, delivery from the phone is currently unavailable, says the FAQ section of the JioMart website. Customers can now order directly from JioMart website.

 JioMart has expanded operations to multiple cities after running pilot programme in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan. Initially, Reliance JioMart was launched in selected areas sin the Mumbai, Maharashtra as a testing model. Now the company has expanded this e-commerce venture across different cities in India. JioMart will now deliver grocery items in more than 200 towns across the country.

#JioMart started trending all over twitter, right after its launch. Consumers started posting their issues on twitter with the hashtag, #JioMart. There were a lot of issues that the consumers faced while ordering on the website, while some complained about the products not being delivered right, others complained about not being able to place the order at all.

Atul Khatri, comic writer called it as the most expensive ‘Kirana Store’ of South Bombay.

Apart from this, there were a few consumers who got their delivery right, and were happy as to get groceries deliver during this crisis situation is the need of the hour.
