Media Reacts to Soleimani’s Assassination



On 3rd January,2020 when everyone was still in a festive mood, when US President Donald Trump gave approval to kill Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Major General Qassem Soleimani,62 at the last minute while he was on a vacation at his resort in Florida in a US drone strike in Iraq on Friday.

This triggered a sense of fear for World War III amongst the people  round the world.


In a statement about the attack, the Pentagon said: “At the direction of the president, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qassem Soleimani.” It added: “This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans. “The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world.”


The country’s President, Hassan Rouhani, promised Iran would continue to resist “American expansionism” and “take revenge” on the dead general’s behalf. Media around the world reported this news and every source media had their own take on the same. Some gave just a gist about the incident, whereas some media companies ssaid that this was a beginning for the World War III.


The CNN reported ‘US drone strike ordered by Trump kills top Iranian commander in Baghdad’ as its headline where it reported that Soleimani was a threat to the world and blamed Soleimani for hundreds of deaths of Americans and their allies in several attacks in recent months. It also had a headline stating Trump warns Iran if it hits any Americans or American assets 'We have targeted 52 Iranian sites'  this news article had information about the tweet that Donald Trump made against the tweet made by the Iranian President of taking revenge.

BBC made the headlines by reporting the Iraq’s side of the story ‘Qasem Soleimani: Iraqi MPs back call to expel US troops’ this aricle was all about the non-binding revolution that was passed by the Iraqi parliament on Sunday, the revolution says "the Iraqi government must work to end the presence of any foreign troops on Iraqi soil and prohibit them from using its land, airspace or water for any reason".


Al Jazeera reported about the people mourning for Soleimani, who was a ‘Hero’ for them  and the headline was ‘Iran in mourning, vows revenge for Qassem Soleimani's killing’

The Times of India had ‘Increase in tension has alarmed the world: India on Iranian general's killing’ as its headline and had the report that how India has consistently advocated restraint and continues to do so.


Radio Channel such as 100.1 Akashvani gave a very unbiased news of what the incident is all about and how can it trigger to the next world war.

‘US Assassination of Iran's General Soleimani Takes West Asia to the Abyss’ was the headline of an online news portal, The Wire. This news portal gave a detailed insight about the entire incident and was a feature article on how the war was initiated in 2018 economically and the militarily and what motivated Trump to take this step.

Citizenship Amendment Bill  (CAB)  has been in the news a lot recently.
