A victory after 7 years of struggle
On 16th December,
2012 in South Delhi a 23-year-old girl was travelling in a bus along with her
male friend when she was gang raped, tortured and
murdered by six men aboard.
The incident
was so heinous and brutal that it led to an uproar all over the world. It
touched the conscience of each and every citizen of India. This case brought
people out on streets, not just demanding safety laws but forcing every home to
mull on the otherwise tabooed issue of gender violence. The case was given the
name of ‘Nirbhaya’ that means ‘fearless’ by the media.
A total of six
people were convicted, out of which one accused being a juvenile was released
after a three-year reform facility. The four convicts, Akshay, Pawan, Vinay and
Mukesh were convicted for raping and murdering the victim. The sixth convict,
Ram Singh died during the trial.
The case was
investigated by IPS Chhaya Sharma. Karuna Nundy was the lawyer
of the victim. The victim died on 29th December, 2012 i.e. within two
weeks of the incident due to grave injuries.
After seven years of the incident, it was only on 18th
December, 2019, the Supreme Court of India rejected the plea of the convicts to
commute the death sentence to life imprisonment. On 6th January,
2020 that the Delhi Court issued a death warrant against the four convicts. The
convicts are to be now executed at Tihar jail on 22nd January, 2020
at 7a.m. i.e. after 14 days of issuing of the death warrant.
